Career Court Reporters Tell Veterans' War Stories "Most people don't understand the sacrifices made by soldiers...who've come back from war," says Bob Day, who with his wife, Pam, is co-chair of the Veterans History Project. "These stories are so valuable to future generations. Once gone, the stories will never be told again. It's a race against time." - Des Moines Registrar, September 20, 2009 Members of the Iowa Court Reporters Association (ICRA) will be working with the AIB College of Business in Des Moines, Iowa on Veterans Day to record the oral histories of military veterans as part of the Veterans History Project. The Veterans History Project was created in 2000 by the Library of Congress to preserve and archive first-person accounts of wartime service. The primary focus of the project is to capture personal narratives from those who served in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Persian Gulf War and the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Iowa court reporters are volunteering their time and unique skills to sit down with hundreds of veterans to accurately record never-before-told war stories from first-hand eyewitnesses. Many of these ICRA volunteers probably entered their court reporter careers thinking they would spend their lives in a courtroom recording legal testimony. However, their work with the Veterans History Project will soon prove that court reporters have many valuable talents that can be applied in a variety of settings. Want a Career as a Court Reporter?
