Opportunities Through Schools of Criminal Justice

It is no secret that the United States' recent economic woes have touched people of every age and class. But workers age 55 and older have been affected more than most, according to recent findings from the U.S. Labor Department.

Roughly 1.85 million older workers were unemployed in April of 2009, which amounts to an unemployment rate of 6.4 percent for workers older than 55. While that's below the overall unemployment rate in the U.S., it's still the highest percentage in that age group since 1948.

While the numbers seem grim, being out of work has given many older workers the opportunity to go back to school and update their skills. They are flocking to their local colleges to retrain for new careers in popular fields such as criminal justice.

Schools of Criminal Justice Benefit Older Americans

Schools of criminal justice are an attractive option for mature workers because industry employers value past work experience and provide jobs that offer lucrative salaries. In addition, U.S. News & World Report cited the U.S. Government, which is the biggest employer of law enforcement professionals at both the local and federal level, as one of the top three industries with the highest demand for older workers.

A recent survey of the top 75 bachelor's degree majors by PayScale.com found that graduates majoring in criminal justice could expect to earn annual salaries of $35,900 in entry-level positions. Mid-career workers, such as those 55 or older, could expect to earn a median annual salary of $59,300. According to the survey, this puts the earning potential of criminal justice degrees in line with other in-demand degrees such as graphic design and medical technology.
