Paralegal - Associate in Applied Science

The Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal is designed to provide students with the fundamental knowledge of legal terminology, substantive and procedural law, drafting and research. Graduates of the program are qualified to assist attorneys in private or corporate practice in addition to working in numerous industries where specialized legal skills are needed, such as government, insurance and real estate. Legal terminology is presented, building a foundation of the common terms used in the legal field. Students practice transcribing the terms from machine dictation. Hands-on learning exercises are used for scheduling, time keeping and client-billing procedures. Introductory courses are offered in Civil Procedures, Family Law and Contract Law. Wills, trusts, estate taxes, estate sales, joint tenancy and judicial determination of death are some other areas offered in the program. Students receive an overview of the various criminal procedures as applied by the courts, particularly the United States Supreme Court.

Paralegal - Bachelor of Science

The Bachelor of Science in Paralegal prepares graduates, under the guidance of an attorney, to interview, gather, review and analyze factual situations; research, prepare and interpret legal documents; and conduct day-to-day operations in a legal office. Graduates may find employment in legal offices, state and federal government agencies, corporate legal departments, insurance companies and legal aid societies.
