Associate's in Legal Studies
Legal office employment opportunities abound for those with specialized legal knowledge and skills. The mission of the paralegal studies program is to prepare students for work in the vast number of offices employing paralegals, including law offices, legal clinics, government agencies, corporations and courts.
Students learn general legal concepts and procedures through 12 carefully chosen core courses. Students learn specialized skills, including legal research, writing and document preparation through practical experience. These skills are emphasized in every course. In addition, students are introduced to law specific programs and services, including Westlaw, Loislaw, Summation Blaze, Timeslips and Abacus Law. These law specific programs and services may be accessed/utilized both at home and at school.
Program objectives:
- To offer a flexible and progressive educational program, which meets the needs of a traditional and nontraditional student population
- To offer an educational program, which integrates legal theory with practical workplace skills
- To instill an understanding of the ethical demands and complications of the practice of law
- To train students competent to deliver high quality legal services to all members of society, including those with unmet legal needs
- To ensure that our students are equipped to identify legal issues, to locate the applicable law and to effectively communicate their findings
- To impart an understanding of the technological resources available to facilitate the efficient management of a law office
