MS in Safety, Security & Emergency Management
Eastern Kentucky University's (EKU) online Master of Science in Safety, Security and Emergency Management is designed to be completed in just two years via part-time study. You will have the flexibility to maintain your current lifestyle and career responsibilities while earning your advanced degree in just 36 credit hours. This program provides an exceptional opportunity to immediately apply what you are learning in your current workplace. Multidisciplinary Track
As a student in the Master of Science in Safety, Security and Emergency Management program, you will be able to choose a "multidisciplinary" track where you will select your support courses from a variety of subject areas that include occupational safety, homeland security, fire administration, security management and business risk management. Occupational Safety Track
The need for educated and experienced professionals in occupational safety continues to rise as do the job opportunities available to such professionals. Eastern Kentucky University recognized this need and has developed an occupational safety concentration within the Master of Science in Safety, Security and Emergency Management degree program.
The occupational safety concentration is designed to:
- Provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in a high-level safety position.
- Educate students on the personal and environmental risks within the workplace; how to assess, analyze and develop safety, emergency management, security and environmental compliance programs; and how to investigate, manage, and prevent hazards/threats in the workplace.
- Prepare graduates for employment in a variety of executive-level safety positions. Our graduates have been hired as managers and directors by major organizations such as Ford Motor Company, Coca-Cola, General Electric and the Marriott Corporation.
Homeland Security Track
In response to suggestions made by our current students and to the increased homeland security needs of our nation, the College of Justice and Safety at Eastern Kentucky University has developed a homeland security concentration within the Master of Science in Safety, Security and Emergency Management degree program.
The Homeland Security Concentration is designed to:
- Provide students with an overview of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which includes a critical analysis of the structure and administration of the DHS.
- Instruct students on how to recognize significant hazards and threats to national and domestic security, analyze intelligence, respond to national disasters and epidemics, and how to best allocate funds to minimize risk factors.
- Prepare graduates for employment in a variety of settings and capacities such as the DEA, Secret Service, FBI, Air Marshals, intelligence analysis, special agents, and emergency management.

Fire & Emergency Services Track
Eastern Kentucky University has developed a fire and emergency services concentration within the Master of Science in Safety, Security and Emergency Management degree program to provide you with the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of fire safety/protection and to enhance your overall skills in this field.
Fire and safety faculty members are recognized nationally and internationally for their teaching, research and dedication to the fire and safety fields. They are active in numerous professional fire organizations such as the National Association of Fire Investigators, National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs and the International Society of Fire Service Instructors. As a student in this program, you will have the opportunity to learn from some of the very best in this field.
The fire and emergency services concentration is designed to:
- Provide students with the strategic planning and leadership skills necessary to develop tactical plans for fire and emergency services within an organization.
- Prepare graduates to manage and direct fire departments, fire prevention services, search and rescue services, fire inspection and investigation offices, etc.
