Master of Science in Safety, Security & Emergency Management

All students in the Master of Science in Safety, Security & Emergency Management online degree program will take 6 core courses focusing on various topics such as safety, security and emergency management administration, legislation and legal compliance, workers' compensation/labor law, emergency preparation and response, and auditing. They will also take support courses on industrial safety management, security management, environmental hazards and specific concentration courses of the student's choice.

Emergency Mangement

This rapidly expanding field demands that professionals have the most up-to-date knowledge on business continuity and emergency planning to be prepared for any man-made or natural disaster. EKU's concentration or certification program in emergency management will prepare graduates to address these threats. Through courses like Business Continuity, Public Emergency Services, and the Evolution of U.S. Emergency Management, students can examine past catastrophic events and plan to respond to future ones.

Ergonomics

The Ergonomics concentration provides students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in a high-level ergonomics position.

The curriculum addresses appropriate risk factors, current regulatory requirements, as well as policy development, effective ergonomic management techniques and occupational safety program development.

The purpose of this concentration is to ensure a safe and healthful work environment for employees.

Fire & Emergency Services

The Fire & Emergency Services Concentration and Certificate programs were designed to build graduate-level knowledge on top of the experience-based skills of professional fire, rescue and emergency response personnel. The curriculum of the Fire & Emergency Services concentration focuses on current issues that affect first response organizations and their strategic operations. Courses in this concentration include strategic planning, leadership, financial administration and public emergency services.

The dynamic fields of first response management, fire engineering and rescue operations, require assertive leaders who can see beyond a situation. This concentration fortifies the leadership aptitude of fire and emergency service professionals, preparing them for management level responsibilities.

Homeland Security

The Homeland Security Concentration and Certificate programs were designed to meet the demands and challenges of the real world and its ever-changing threats to the security of the nation. The curriculum of the Homeland Security concentration focuses on current issues that affect security, safety and emergency management personnel. Courses in this concentration include policy analysis, infrastructure protection, intelligence and hazards and threats to Homeland Security.

After the events of 9/11, Homeland Security has become a prime focus in public and private organizations at all levels. Master's program graduates who select this track will be prepared to actively engage in leadership roles in a variety of government agencies and private enterprise.

Occupational Safety

The Occupational Safety Concentration and Certificate programs develop the critical management skills required by engineers, occupational safety and loss prevention personnel involved in risk management and occupational safety.

The curriculum of the Occupational Safety concentration builds knowledge on hazard control principles related to the management of personnel, facilities, and equipment. Courses in this concentration include Industrial and Construction Safety, Corporate Compliance and Personal and Environmental Hazards.
